Arcade plans for Inverness betting shop

A former William Hill betting shop in Inverness could be reopened as an amusement arcade, if the Highland Council approves plans submitted by Intervision Gaming (UK) Limited.

Plans for the site, located on Queensgate in the city centre, will go before the council’s planning committee this week to assess suitability due to its Category C listed status.

“The applicant is in the process of finalising leasing arrangements in order to transform it into what is described as a “high-end licensed adult gaming centre for over 18s only” with a variety of gaming machines,” reported the Inverness Courier.

“The applicant will make no changes to the exterior fabric of the building other than new signs and there are no internal elements of heritage importance.”

A supporting statement, submitted alongside the proposal, states “this proposal should be seen as a positive diversification of use that fits perfectly with council policy that aims to invigorate city centre business, footfall, diversity and tourist engagement.”

The building itself was subject to significant damage in January, after an E220 Mercedes drove into the shop, injuring four people and forcing immediate structural repair.

Work to restore the frontage was only able to begin on 1 March, with the submission forming part of plans to renovate the unit.

The planning report concludes that “the applicant has proven success in this field of business.”
