Isle of Wight theme park proposal

The Isle of Wight Council has revealed its ongoing plans to find an investor for Dinosaur Isle on Sandown seafront could lead to “a Disneyland opportunity” for the site.

Council documents reveal proposals will cost the buyer “significantly more” than the previously stated £33m, and could see a new theme park open within two years.

“A lot of people have an affinity to this location,” council leader Dave Stewart told a council meeting on 11 March, noting the scheme could deliver a “Disneyland opportunity for a dinosaur park.”

“If all works well, we can see some great success in a town that needs and deserves regeneration.”

Though the current bidder remains anonymous, the Island Echo reported earlier this week that it understands this bidder “to be the team behind Europe’s Dinosauria Park, which the Isle of Wight Council paid over £1,500 to recently.”

Though plans for the south east coast site are yet to enter the public domain, cabinet member for regeneration and business development told councillors the scheme would create an attraction on “a different level” and “go way beyond” what was asked by the council.

Councillors are expected to report back to the cabinet on the current tender proposals before June, with the park potentially opening by Spring 2023 if approved.
