Southend Council has confirmed that more than 150,000 people visited the town’s ionic pier during 2020, with October and September even beating 2019 visitation figures.

Despite Southend Pier closing for a five month period, the landmark welcomed 168,000 guests over the year, thanks to rigorous hygiene measures keeping the pier accessible.

“When we reopened the pier back in June, we knew that many people would be cautious about visiting, given the concern surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic,” councillor for business, culture, and tourism Kevin Robinson told the Echo. “However, we still managed to beat some 2019 visitor numbers.”

“I am delighted to say we have seen over 168,000 people visit the pier in 2020 despite the various closures that were necessary. It is fantastic to see there is still a real interest in taking in the magnificent views 1.3 miles into the estuary.”

However, it wasn’t just the Covid-related desire for outdoor exercise that drove residents to enjoy the pier in their thousands, with visitation figures for January 2020 hitting 16,808 – a 14-year record.

The figure comes as Southend Council continues its multi-million pound investment in the landmark.

“We are looking forward to introducing the new eco-friendly pier trains in 2021, which is even more reason to take a trip to the pier once we can reopen.”
