Southend Council has confirmed its multimillion pound restoration of Southend Pier is underway, with the new Royal Pavilion restaurant and refurbished train service set to be in operation in time for summer.

The new environmentally- friendly train service will allow visitors easier access to the pier head, which will also be the site of a brand-new viewing platform, toilet facilities and additional wind breaks.

“These works follow years of continued and ongoing investment into the structure of the pier, work starting on the £3.25m project to replace the Pier trains, and also the continuation of impressive pier visitor numbers when we’ve been able to welcome visitors,” said Southend Council’s director for culture and tourism Scott Dolling.

“It’s been an incredibly challenging year for the hospitality sector, and we hope by improving the offering at the pier head, alongside the fantastic new trains, we will have a bumper summer of visitors to our town to help give the economy a real boost.”

Work to fit a new kitchen, bar and serving area in the Royal Pavilion is expected to be completed by June, while transport manufacturer Severn Lamb is on course to deliver the pier’s new electric trains in time for summer.
